BBC3 Spooks the competition

BBC3's new Spooks spin-off made a cracking start yesterday, with 810,000 (3.8%) watching the first episode at 9pm.

The 50-minute Spooks: Code 9 began with 862,000 (4.08%) in the opening 15-minutes but slipped to 767,000 (3.54%) at 9.45pm

The drama, featuring Joanne Froggatt and Georgia Moffett, was way above the channel's slot average for the year so far of 494,000 (2.28%) and well over double the average for last year of 348,000 (1.74%).

BBC3 rolled out the second episode immediately after the first and picked up 703,000 (4%). The episode peaked with 740,000 (3.84%) at the start.

Both episodes gained a strong ABC1 audience. The first episode gained a 57.1% profile share while the second rose to 61.8%. The show was also attractive to younger viewers. Viewers aged between 16 and 34 made up 22.7% of the first episode's audience 25.7% of the second.

BBC3 was also on form before the drama started, with the movie Lara Croft: Tomb Raider attracting 648,000 (3.32%) at 7.30pm.

No other multichannel offering gave BBC3 any cause for concern during Spooks: Code 9. Putting up some resistance at 9pm was ITV2's The Sixth Sense, which grabbed 412,000 (2.52%) over two hours with a further 92,000 watching on ITV2+1.

Ratings slip for Spooks spin-off

BBC3's Spooks: Code 9 took a tumble in the ratings yesterday but still claimed the top spot at 9pm with 447,000 (2.07%).

The third outing of the drama spin-off began with 466,000 (2.17%) with its audience slowly declining to 433,000 (2.1%) in the final 15-minutes. The show was slightly under the channel's sot average for the year so far of 494,000 (2.28%).

The new series got underway last week with a double bill. The first episode, at 9pm gained 810,000 (3.5%) with the following edition at 9.55pm on 703,000 (4%).

Last night's episode had been preceded by the Tomb Raider film Cradle of Life, which pulled in 611,000 (3.17%) at 7.10pm.

Over the main part of peaktime viewing BBC3 locked horns with ITV's own youth entertainment channel ITV2.

All hours shares for Sunday 17 August 2008: BBC1 – 30%, ITV1 – 14.1%, BBC2 – 8.9%, Five - 5.5%, C4 – 5.2% (C4+1 – 0.8%), multichannel – 35.5%.

Peaktime (6pm to 10.30pm) shares: BBC1 – 19.7%, ITV1 – 24.6%, C4 – 6.9% (C4+1 – 0.8%), BBC2 – 8.9%, Five – 8.6%, multichannel – 30.5%.

Martin Clunes: A Man and His Dogs

Martin Clunes beat Andrew Marr in the battle of the authored documentaries on Sunday, August 24, with his ITV1 show about the history of dogs gaining nearly 6 million viewers.

ITV1's Martin Clunes: A Man and His Dogs attracted 5.7 million viewers and a 25% share in the 9pm hour, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The final episode of Sky1's Gladiators pulled in 587,000 viewers and a multichannel share of 3.6% between 7pm and 8pm.

Over on BBC3, the fourth instalment of Spooks spin-off Code 9 drew 288,000 viewers and a multichannel share of 1.4%.

This was way down on the launch episode of Spooks: Code 9 two Sundays ago, which pulled in 810,000 viewers.
